Wine
Connect Newsletter, March 2015.
As we approach the end
of March and the autumn colours start to appear on the leaves in the vineyards
around Bendigo, I am reminded that the 2015 vintage in Australia is drawing to
a close.
We have experienced a
relatively mild summer with typically low levels of rainfall. However the most
significant feature of the 2015 vintage has been the extremely early start to
the Harvest.
When my parents started Château Leamon we would commence the harvest in the first week of April and it
was not uncommon to be picking the last of the Cabernet in May. This year’s harvest
commenced in many vineyards during the second half of February, this would have
been unheard of in the 70’s. One reason for this was
possibly the small crop in many vineyards due to spring frosts in 2014
resulting in a small crop which the vines are able to ripen more easily. The
main reason however must be global warming as the harvest has been getting
earlier and earlier each year since the early 90’s.

Tasting
Notes
Bright, purple/red hue, lovely colour. There are
sweet fruit aromas combined with lovely spicy notes which are very attractive
leading to a full fruit driven palate. The palate is soft and rounded with
delicious, lingering Sangiovese fruit followed by savoury and slightly dry
tannins.
Sangiovese 95% Colorino and Canaiolo 5%.
Brick red in colour. The nose is dominated by the spicy aromas of cloves
and white pepper. The palate is tremendously fruit driven with lots of luscious
fruit and a long silky finish. This is a lovely wine if you are trying Italian
wines for the first time as it is very approachable now. Perfect with a large
bowl of pasta.
This wine has a lovely garnet red hue. The bouquet has the savoury, spicy
aromas of Sangiovese combined with beautiful dusty French Oak. The palate has
lovely up front fruit intensity which fills the mouth. This gives way to a
savoury finish with lovely dry tannins and a zesty acidity which will see this
wine cellar well for a further 5 to 8 years, 100% Sangiovese.
